Keep Brewing and Carry On: Introducing Our Annual Family Open Day

Every part of our lives involves the concept of simply ‘carrying on’. It involves work, looking after the kids, making tea, doing the washing, getting up and going to bed. Our everyday routines are very repetitive and a lot of the time we are struggling for motivation, but we simply carry on, because we have to. It is that notion that the world keeps on moving, regardless of what you do, that underpins Ossett Brewery’s ethos of hard work and making the most of opportunities, but it is also central to the support we give to our preferred charity; the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice.

Our annual Family Open Day is coming up again in September, with all proceeds going to the hospice, as has been the case for our previous events of this nature. We hold plenty of open days and social events across the year, particularly now that we have a shiny, new extended brewery to show off, but perhaps the most pleasurable one is the annual family day, because it brings home the nature of what is most important in our lives; family.

The Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice devotes too many selfless hours to count, to the welfare of children struck with the full range of conditions, but usually life-shortening ones, from birth injuries to rare conditions developed early in childhood. They don’t specialise in any one condition, just a universal love of children and helping them and their families. It takes a dedication of unrivalled proportions from a team of volunteers, donors, fundraisers and business supporters to provide this vital care, and for them, and for the children, and for the families, life is simply a case of having to carry on.

So for everybody at Ossett Brewery, the support we give to the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice acts as a huge motivating factor; both in making the most of our own lives and appreciating the family and friends we have around us, but also in working to provide support for this charity that works as a vital resource to people who have received devastating news and have to deal with it every day.

Carrying on is what they have to do; usually when facing huge obstacles that might be there every day. The children and families wake up daily and try to deal with the conditions they face, trying to find solutions to problems and trying to make the best of the situation they are in. In that respect, the Hospice is a wonderful respite to their daily challenges in the form of nursing care, days out, therapy and simply being somebody to listen and support.

The Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice helps people across the West Yorkshire region from its base at Russell House in Huddersfield, so it touches the same people that we serve through our pub estate at Ossett Brewery. Over the years we have built up a customer base that acts as an embodiment of the traditional, warm Yorkshire spirit that has prevailed for centuries, and it is that same empathy with people that makes us proud to support the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice and the work they do for families in West Yorkshire; after all, we are all one big family.

So we have another annual Family Open Day on the horizon. Saturday September 8th looks like being our biggest and most impressive Open Day yet, with the extension work at the brewery almost finished, visitors will be able to see our new production facilities at close hand and of course, marvel at the lovely stuff they are producing.

We are still finalising our beer list for the Open Day, but you are sure to see a mixture of Ossett Brewery classics, some seasonal specials and a few offerings from our microbreweries at the Rat & Ratchet, the Riverhead and Fernandes. We will be offering both keg and cask beer and it is a great opportunity for beer lovers to sample some of our staple beers, plus something a little bit different.

Also in attendance at the Open Day will be a number of artists providing live music and acoustic sets throughout the course of the day. This has become another feature of our social events and has really proved popular with people finding new artists they can subsequently follow, and in some cases re-discovering a love for live music and a hunger for getting out of the house and finding some. We love to showcase up and coming local acts and there will be another roster of innovative artists providing the soundtrack to the Open Day and making the convivial atmosphere even better.

As always, the Open Day is free to enter from 12 noon until 7pm, and everybody is welcome, even the dog. There will be barbecue food available plus our very popular wood-fired pizzas being made fresh on the day. There will be plenty of children’s activities, including face painting and a bouncy castle, plus, of course everybody loves a Grand Raffle.

So our annual Family Open Day is looking like another winner and the perfect way to entertain the family and wave goodbye to a wonderful summer. September is coming and we hope the amazing weather isn’t quite over yet, but either way, we will continue along our merry way and get on with things. Like Ossett Brewery, all our customers and all the staff, children and families at the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice, we simply carry on.
